Short introduction

The Akkon University of Human Sciences in Berlin is unique: private, state-recognized, the first and only university sponsored by a relief organization, the Johanniter Unfall-Hilfe e. V., and with its (in-)institute "IRIA," engaged in application-oriented research and consulting in humanitarian aid and development cooperation worldwide.

With needs-based degree programs in Nursing & Medicine, Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid, and Education & Social Work, we contribute to the advancement of the humanities and qualify our students in academic and personal skills through innovative teaching and learning methods. We are involved in social projects at national and international level and cooperate in research, teaching, and academic research with institutions, NGOs, and companies around the world.

In light of the increasing intensity and frequency of crises, disasters, and conflict situations worldwide, be they earthquakes, epidemics, or chronic disasters such as tuberculosis or drought, the university founded the Institute for Research in International Assistance (IRIA) in 2018. It develops answers and solutions to the pressing questions in international emergency and disaster relief and global health through groundbreaking interdisciplinary research projects.

The current focus is on these research questions in the health sector:

• Restructuring of Global Health to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals
• Civil-military cooperation in humanitarian aid and development cooperation
• Global Health Security/Diplomacy
• Health systems in transition, particularly in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and sub-Saharan Africa
• One Health/Planetary Health
• Combating (re-)emerging infectious diseases
• Training & education of local actors and decision-makers

Akkon University and IRIA operate on a non-profit basis. Their projects are funded by third-party sources, including the Federal Ministry of Health, the Federal Foreign Office, the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), and companies.
