Venezuela earthquake: Malteser International provides 250.000 euros

Cologne/Caracas. Two earthquakes measuring 7,2 and 7,5 on the Richter scale struck Venezuela's western coastal region on Wednesday evening local time. Buildings collapsed in cities near the epicenter, and thousands of deaths are feared. Malteser International will immediately provide €250.000 in emergency aid to the affected areas to deliver rapid assistance.
“The two earthquakes were particularly severe. The second quake, in particular, with a magnitude of 7,5 and occurring only ten kilometers below the Earth's surface, caused widespread destruction. Another problem is the dense population of the affected areas, which means that many people will be impacted. Thousands have lost their belongings and their homes. It is now crucial that they receive rapid assistance. We are currently assessing the situation and will, as a next step, provide people with essential supplies,” says Jonas Jung, Emergency Relief Coordinator at Malteser International.
The Simon Bolivar International Airport in Maiquetia, near Caracas, has been closed due to earthquake damage, and train services have been suspended. Power and communication services have been disrupted in parts of Caracas and other areas of the country. Malteser International, through a local partner organization and the Venezuelan Order of Malta, has been providing aid to the people for many years. The economic situation in the South American country has been very strained for many years.
