Lebanon: Malteser International expands aid for refugees

Cologne/BeirutThe situation for the people in Lebanon is becoming increasingly critical following the recent escalation with massive attacks in the south and east of Lebanon, and particularly in the southern suburbs of Beirut: "Many people left in a hurry and were only able to take the bare essentials with them. According to government figures, around one million people are now on the run within their own country. The Lebanese government is talking about the largest number of internally displaced people in the country's history in such a short period of time. People are queuing up in front of the health centers that we run across the country together with our Lebanese partner organization. The refugees are currently lacking everything - from accommodation to water, food and hygiene supplies," reports Lisa Kramer, Country Coordinator in Lebanon, who was still working on site until a few days ago.

Together with its local partner organization, the Lebanese Order of Malta Lebanon, Malteser International is expanding its assistance for refugees in Lebanon: "Our colleagues in Lebanon are working far beyond the usual to bring aid to the people. In particular, we are expanding our medical assistance, distributing hot meals, and taking care of the procurement of relief supplies for the refugees," says Kramer. At the same time, Malteser International is preparing for further refugee movements in the region.

Since 2012, Malteser International has been working with the Lebanese Order of Malta to help people in need in Lebanon. Malteser International focuses on mobile and inpatient healthcare (four mobile clinics and eleven health centers of the Lebanese Order of Malta throughout the country) as well as improving the nutritional situation through the operation of agricultural centers.

Malteser International (MI) operates as an international humanitarian aid organization. It is a relief agency of the Catholic Order of Malta and is specifically dedicated to fulfilling the Order's mission of "helping those in need." Its mission is to improve the health and living conditions of people in need and displaced people worldwide. The organization provides assistance to people in need through over 140 projects in 37 countries, regardless of religion, political beliefs, origin, or gender. Christian values and the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence form the basis of its work. Further information: www.malteser-international.org
