Sudan: Doctors and paramedics train medical personnel

Cologne/Port SudanMore than three years after the start of the war, the humanitarian situation in Sudan is catastrophic. Over half the population is dependent on humanitarian aid. Around 20 million people currently lack adequate access to medical care. Many health facilities have been destroyed, and medical personnel have been killed or fled to neighboring countries. From June 1st to 4th, an emergency relief team from Malteser International, supplemented by an infection prevention expert from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), will train nurses, water experts, and doctors in Port Sudan. The team will, among other things, train staff in the recognition of cardiovascular diseases and in the safe handling of infectious diseases, as cholera and dengue fever pose a major challenge for healthcare workers.
“The situation in healthcare facilities is alarming. Due to a shortage of skilled workers, many hospital wards are understaffed. To ensure that people can continue to receive life-saving care even under these difficult conditions, we will primarily train medical personnel in life-saving measures,” says Edo Lihic, Head of Operations for Malteser International’s Sudan Emergency Relief effort. The emergency team will focus on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and infection prevention and control to address critical gaps in emergency care and the treatment of patients with infectious diseases in hospitals. The eight-member team consists of paramedics, a doctor, a physician, logisticians, and water and hygiene experts.
The mission is being carried out in coordination with the Sudanese Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO). A Malteser International team was already in Port Sudan in December 2025, training medical personnel. The mission is being funded by Aktion Deutschland Hilft.
