Cyclone in Bangladesh: Malteser International provides emergency aid

Cologne/Dhaka / May 03rd, 2024 – After Cyclone Remal caused severe devastation in the border region between India and Bangladesh about a week ago, Malteser International is launching an emergency relief program and providing 100.000 euros. Together with local partner organizations, houses, latrines, and stables are being rebuilt in 34 villages. In addition, Malteser International staff will distribute cash to particularly affected households.

"In some villages, almost the entire harvest has been destroyed, leaving people without a livelihood. It is now vital that we provide rapid assistance through our local partner organizations and support the reconstruction of the villages," says Antje Kania, Malteser International's Country Officer for Bangladesh.

According to local authorities, around 4,6 million people have been affected by the cyclone in Bangladesh.

Malteser International has been working in Bangladesh since 2017, primarily in refugee settlements in the Cox's Bazar district. Health, water, hygiene, and nutrition are the focus of its work there. A partner organization provides medical care, especially to expectant mothers and newborns, and psychosocial counseling in three health centers.
