Parliamentary evening on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the focus of global health policy

Noncommunicable diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases are responsible for around 70 percent of all deaths worldwide. They threaten not only health but also prosperity and social participation—especially in countries with already weak health systems.
The evening will be dedicated to the recently held UN High-Level Meetings on NCDs and Mental Health, which marks an important political milestone. Now, however, the real work begins: the political commitments made there must be translated into concrete measures. Given the current crisis in global health financing, the question arises as to how this can be achieved.
The focus of the evening will therefore be on discussing how Germany can further strengthen its development and health policy responsibility for combating NCDs and how ambitious global NCD targets can be effectively implemented even under difficult financial conditions. Two new Position papers of the Global Health Hub Germany and the GHA – German Health Alliance provide current ideas and serve as a basis for discussion. The aim of the evening is to identify, together with representatives from politics, science, civil society, and business, ways in which Germany can shape its commitment to NCDs in an effective and future-oriented manner.
