GHA / Afrika Verein Roundtable
Market Access & Localizing MedTech / Healthcare
for Mutual Growth
Europe & Africa as Future Partners
Local Solutions – Global Business Growth
The GHA – German Health Alliance (GHA) and Afrika Verein der deutschen Wirtschaft invite to a roundtable discussion on 2 July 2026, enabling an exchange with the Egyptian Unified Procurement Authority (UPA) on market access opportunities and localization strategies for MedTech and healthcare products in Egypt as a hub for Africa.
Background
Egypt’s health sector is undergoing significant transformation driven by government reforms and increased investment. Imports of medical technology are estimated at €1 billion in 2025, in addition to approx. €2.2 billion in pharmaceuticals. At the same time, Africa and Egypt’s MedTech strategy focuses strongly on gradual localization to achieve economic self‑sufficiency.
The recently signed African Pooled Procurement Mechanism (APPM), led by the Africa CDC and endorsed by the African Union (AU), creates a more unified and predictable market. It aims to strengthen purchasing power, reduce procurement fragmentation, and enable more equitable access to medicines, vaccines, diagnostics and medical technologies, with the ambition to locally produce 60% of Africa’s health products by 2040.
The Egyptian Unified Procurement Authority (UPA) acts as a centralized procurement and supply interface for all public procurement of MedTech and pharmaceuticals in Egypt and plays a key role in advancing this initiative as a pivotal regional partner in operationalising the APPM.
Roundtable Discussion
Within the roundtable, an open discussion will address the following development strategies aiming to support mutual economic interests and sustainable trade and manufacturing cooperation:
- Facilitating EDA / MDR compatibility and brand & technology recognition
- African export orientation strategies under APPM, COMESA and AfCFTA
- First‑phase and continuous off‑take / distribution agreements with UPA
- Financial incentive schemes, including EU / MedTech tax‑free zones, usufruct models, investment support and guarantees by international funds
