Strengthening the Ghanaian Pharmaceutical Sector with a Focus on Vaccine Production

Background about the Programme

The pharmaceutical sector has been identified as a key driver for Ghana’s industrial transformation and the creation of decent jobs. Building on this momentum, the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) are co-financing the programme “Strengthening the Ghanaian Pharmaceutical Sector with a Focus on Vaccine Production” (PharmaVax Ghana) under the Team Europe Initiative on Manufacturing and Access to Vaccines, Medicines and Health Technologies in Africa (MAV+). GIZ is implementing this programme until mid-2028 in partnership with the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, the National Vaccine Institute, the Food and Drugs Authority, the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Ghana and other stakeholders. The programme focuses on four key areas:

  1. Enhancing governance and regulatory capacities for pharmaceutical production
  2. Supporting skills development for the pharmaceutical workforce
  3. Promoting applied research and industry–academia collaboration
  4. Strengthening private sector capacities for production and market access

Upcoming Opportunities

This year, we will host a virtual information event (webinar) to introduce German and European SMEs to Ghana’s pharmaceutical sector, highlight partnership and investment opportunities, and generate interest. This will be followed by a delegation trip to Ghana, featuring B2B meetings, company visits, and networking events. Target participants include manufacturers, equipment and technology providers, consulting firms, and businesses in related fields such as packaging, plant-based medicines, cosmetics and personal care, and food supplements.
