Brief Introduction:

Malteser International is the worldwide humanitarian relief agency of the Sovereign Order of Malta. The mandate is to provide relief and recovery during and following conflicts and disasters, but also to continue with development approaches if needed. Our special expertise is transitional assistance in the humanitarian-development-nexus. Malteser International is primarily active in the health sector, in which we have almost 60 years of continuous experience. Christian values and humanitarian principles form the foundations of our work: bringing aid to people regardless of their religion, background, or political convictions at over 100 Projects in more than 25 countries.

Malteser International provides emergency relief in crises such as natural disasters, epidemics, or armed conflicts. During acute crises, teams from Malteser International are on the ground as soon as possible to assist local capacities and partners to provide emergency medical care, (re)establishing functioning health facilities, and ensure the supply of cash or food and other essential assistance as needed. Malteser International coordinates its work with all government and other relevant stakeholders. A WHO classified Emergency Medical Team (EMT) of Malteser International can be deployed within few days.

Supporting the health and wellbeing of people in an integrated way and contributing to universal health coverage (UHC) is the central aim of the work. Malteser International does this by comprehensive health system strengthening, and protecting health by ensuring people have access to adequate nutrition, as well as water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). Malteser International takes a holistic approach to its work: seeking to strengthen the resilience of people in especially vulnerable regions against future crises. Accordingly, Disaster Risk Reduction through enhanced Epidemic Preparedness and Response capacities as well as Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) in the health sector play a central role, while Malteser International works to maintain high standards of quality and transparency at all times.
