Press Statement by World Health Summit President Axel R. Pries on the Global Health Summit in Rome on May 21
(Berlin, May 19, 2021)
“Health needs to be a global public asset, this is one of the many things the COVID-19 pandemic has made undoubtedly clear. With the whole world feeling the effects of SARS-CoV-2 and its mutations, we must act as a global community, this is in all our interests.
We need sustainable strategies for pandemic preparation and response. It is of utmost importance to improve this worldwide in order to better address future threats. Responding to threats like COVID-19 requires a broad societal approach and international collaboration among all sectors.
An important step towards being better prepared for potential future pandemics is “Universal Health Coverage.” It is one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and it is far from being achieved. And health must be integrated into all political areas as a cross-cutting issue: “Health in all Policies” is an urgent requirement.”
Prof. Dr. Axel Radlach Pries is President of the World Health Summit and Dean of Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
